Lichtenstein alive and well and living in... Dudley

Eat It

Students at Dudley College can be forgiven for thinking that legendary pop artist Roy Lichtenstein has been moonlighting as their new interior designer, with the opening of their new-look refectory. Pyramid were brought in by ABM Catering to rebrand the previously bland and under-used restaurant and café areas, and opted to grab the students' attention with a bright, funky pop-art style environment to relax in. There are now three clearly defined areas - 'Café Venue' and 'Sub Venue' provide a range of drinks and snacks, but it is 'Main Venue' which really needed to win back the students, where ABM aim to provide a wide variety of meals using fresh and locally sourced produce.

Pyramid have previously applied the 'Venue' branding to several of ABM's other in-house catering facilities, including the Levi's HQ in Northampton, but this one is probably the most visually ambitious yet, with the bright colours and a liberal sprinkling of Ben-Day dots providing a synergy between the three catering areas.

Directional signage helps to locate and signpost the facilities within the college, while entrance signage, large display units and frosted window graphics are used within the restaurant itself, along with menu display boards which need to display both standard long-term items and also house interchangeable daily menus. A reward scheme, proposed by Pyramid, has been set up using a set of postcards which also support the overall design theme, offering incentives for repeat visits. Finally a series of canvasses also adorn the walls, depicting a series of Lichtenstein-style characters extolling the virtues of the food on offer.

The new look is reputed to be POPular with the students and business is good.
